Update your bookmarks! hpnadig.com is now hpnadig.net! I finally made the decision to switchover since .com never suited for a personal domain. I also had registered hpnadig.info before I could know that .info domains are being given out for free! Thanks to dotster.com, I could register hariprasad.info, and hariprasadnadig.info which point to the same site ;)

hpnadig.net hasn't yet gotten resolved. So, you people can use hpnadig.info for the moment!

Mysore Zoo - The deaths of innocent elephants

Well, its sad that its happening in Mysore, after all why do they need to poison those innocent elephants? Or is it just the height of carelessness? Mysore Zoo might become a infamous Zoo if this continues.

I wrote an article today on english wikipedia on Mysore Zoo to update the information. People should know whats going on in the name of 'conservation'. :P

೧೯೭೦ - ಕಳ್ಳಸಾಗಾಣಿಕೆದಾರರ ಗುಂಪೊಂದನ್ನು ಸೇರಿದನು.

೧೯೮೬ - ಬಂಧಿಸಿ ಬೂದಿಪಾಡ ಕಾಡಿನ ಗ್ಯೆಸ್ಟ್ ಹೌಸ್‌ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡಿಹಾಕಲಾಯಿತು. ಆದರೆ ನಿಗೂಡವಾಗಿ ಪರಾರಿಯಾದ. (ಲಂಚ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಪರಾರಿಯಾದ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ)

೧೯೮೯ - ಬೇಗೂರು ಅರಣ್ಯ ಪ್ರದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ೩ ಜನ ಅರಣ್ಯ ಇಲಾಖೆಯ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಲೆಗೈದ.

೧೯೯೦ - ತನ್ನ ತಂಡದ ಇಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಕೊಂದದ್ದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಸೇಡಿನಂತೆ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಲೆಗೈದ.

ಇನ್ನೂ ೪ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಲೆಗೈದ. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯವು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್‌ನ ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಸ್ಪೆಷಲ್ ಟ್ಯಾಸ್ಕ್ ಫೋರ್ಸ್ (ವಿಶೇಷ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ಪಡೆ) ಅನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿತು.
ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಡೆಪ್ಯುಟಿ ಕನ್ಸರ್ವೇಟರ್ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಗುಂಡಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಂದು ತಲೆ ಕಡಿದು ಹಾಕಿದ (ತನ್ನ ತಂಗಿಯ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆಗೆ ತೀರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಸೇಡು ಇದಾಗಿತ್ತು). ೩ ವರ್ಷಗಳ ನಂತರ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್‌ರವರ ತಲೆಯು ಪತ್ತೆಯಾಯಿತು.

೧೯೯೨ - ರಾಂಪುರದ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಸ್ಟೇಶನ್ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿ ಐದು ಜನರನ್ನು ಪೋಲಿಸರನ್ನು ಕೊಲೆಗೈದು ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಮದ್ದು, ಗುಂಡು ಮತ್ತು ಅಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ದೋಚಿದ. ಎಸ್ ಟಿ ಎಫ್ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ್ತರವಾಗಿ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ತಂಡದ ೪ ಜನರನ್ನು ಗುಂಡಿಟ್ಟಿ ಕೊಂದಿತು.

ಎಸ್ ಟಿ ಎಫ್ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ ಹರಿಕೃಷ್ಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಷಕೀಲ್ ಅಹ್ಮದ್ ಮತ್ತು ೨೫ ಕಾನ್ಸ್ಟಬಲ್‌ಗಳನ್ನು ಸುಳ್ಳು ಮಾಹಿತಿದಾರನ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿಹಾಕಿಸಲು ಬಲೆ ಬೀಸಿದ. ಈ ತಂಡದ ಆರು ಜನರನ್ನು ಕೈ ಬಾಂಬುಗಳಿಂದ, ಗ್ರೆನೇಡ್‌ಗಳಿಂದ ಕೊಂದನು.

೧೯೯೩ - ಪೋಲಿಸರು ಹಾಗು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ ೨೨ ಪ್ರಯಾಣಿಕರಿದ್ದ ಬಸ್ಸನ್ನು ನೆಲ ಬಾಂಬಿನಿಂದ ಉಡಾಯಿಸಿದನು.

ಎಸ್ ಪಿ ಗೋಪಾಲ್ ಹೊಸೂರ್‌ರ ವಿಶೇಷ ತಂಡದ ೬ ಪೋಲೀಸರನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು.
ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು ಸರಕಾರವು ಬಾರ್ಡರ್ ಸೆಕ್ಯೂರಿಟಿ ಫೋರ್ಸ್‌ಅನ್ನು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್‌ನ ಹಿಡಿಯಲು ಗೊತ್ತು ಮಾಡಿತು.
ಬಿಎಸ್‌ಎಫ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಎಸ್‌ಟಿಎಫ್‌ನ ಮಿಶ್ರ ಕಾರ್ಯಾಚರಣೆ ಪಡೆ ೧೯ ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಸಹಚರರನ್ನು ಹಿಡಿದು ೬ ಜನರನ್ನು ಕೊಂದಿತು. ೩ ಜನ ಪೋಲಿಸರು ಹತರಾದರು.
ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್ ಶರಣಾಗತನಾಗಲು ಹಲವು ಷರತ್ತುಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟ. ಆದರೆ ಹುತಾತ್ಮರ ಸಂಬಂಧಿಕರು ವೀರಪ್ಪನ್‌ನ ಷರತ್ತಿನನುಗುಣವಾಗಿ ಸರಕಾರ ಯಾವುದೇ ಕ್ರಮ ತೆಗುದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದನ್ನು ವಿರೋದಿಸಿದರು.

೧೯೯೬ - ಒಬ್ಬ ಪೋಲೀಸ್ ಮಾಹಿತಿಗಾರನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು.

ಇನ್ನೂ ಹತ್ತು ಪೋಲೀಸ್ ಸಿಬ್ಬಂದಿಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು.
ಪೋಲೀಸ್ ಕಸ್ಟಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ತಮ್ಮ ಅರ್ಜುನನ್ ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇಡೆಂಬಂತೆ ಪೋಲಿಸ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಿ ತಮಿಳ್ಸೆಲ್ವನ್‌ನ ಮೇಲೆ ದಾಳಿ ನಡೆಸಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಕಾನ್ಸ್ಟಬಲ್‌ಅನ್ನು ಕೊಂದನು.

೨೦೦೦ - ಡಾ. ರಾಜ್‌ಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರನ್ನು ಅವರ ಗಾಜನೂರು ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಅಪಹರಿಸಿ ೧೦೯ ದಿನಗಳ ಬಳಿಕ ಬಿಟ್ಟನು (ಹಣ ಪಡೆದ ಬಳಿಕ).

೨೦೦೨ - ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಮಂತ್ರಿಯೋರ್ವರಾದ ನಾಗಪ್ಪರವರನ್ನು ಅಪಹರಿಸಿ ಕೊಂದನು.

೨೦೦೪ - ತಮಿಳುನಾಡು ಸ್ಪೆಶಲ್ ಟ್ಯಾಸ್ಕ್ ಫೋರ್ಸ್‌ನಿಂದ ಸಾಯಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟ.

National Anthem of India vs National song?

Had read somewhere long back that our National anthem was supposedly written to welcome the British emperor. Came across more details about that fact today on this wikipedia article.

Today, I've put the kannada version of our National anthem on Kannada Wikipedia. I also started a stub about Vande Maataram song - which, as mentioned, is our National Song. I love this song! How nice it would've been to have a song like this as our national anthem!

Hampi

Hampi has been the remains of what once had been the glory of Karnataka, as vijayanagara empire.

Today, I rearranged (cleaned) the article on Hampi on en:wikipedia and translated it for kn:wkipedia. Here's the Hampi article in kannada.

Interestingly, there's an article on hampi on the French wikipedia too! ;)

Dasara

Now, Dasara is not a one day festival, atleast here in South India. People often mistake Vijayadashami to dasara and navaratri to vijayadasahami. Vijaya dashami is just one of those days of celebrations in the 'nava' ratris.

On the same lines, I added a page to en:wikipedia on Dasara....

Saraswati Pooja

Saraswati pooja is held on one day among all these days of celebration. Any piece of literature is wrapped in silk, decorated with Tulsi and worshipped as godessess Saraswati. It is a custom to remember 'Veda Vyaasa' - the light of knowledge who was responsible for the epic 'Mahabharata' and vedas and the holy literature, Shri Madhbhagavadh Gita. It is thought that his blessings can make people knowledgable.

The Following shloka is used on the day:

विज्ञानरीचिः परिपूरितांतर्बाह्यांडकोशं हरितोपलाभम् ।
तर्काभयेतं विधिशर्वपूर्वगीर्वाण विज्ञानदमानतो: अस्मि ॥

Bombe habba

Various colorful Toys are arranged on tables in different levels, and celebrated on this particular day. Children are invited and given 'Bombe BagiNa' - which usually consists of sweets, small toys for the children. This festival is celebrated with more glory in and around Mysore, Karnataka.

Durgashtami

Godessess Durga is worshipped on this day.

Mahanavami

The ninth day of celebration.

Ayudha Puja

This day is to worship weapons. People in the modern days worship automobiles, their machines on this day.

Vijaya Dashami

The last day of all the celebrations is Vijaya Dashami. In Mysore Dasara, a tradition of carrying godesses Chamundeshwari on a golden chariot heaved on a Elephant is in practice since the days of the old Mysore Kingdom in the Wodeyars' rule. People from all over the world go to Mysore to witness this cultural event. Many cultural events happen at the main Palace in Mysore. Post Independence, the Government of Karnataka has taken over the tradition and is continuing the celebration every year in the same tradition as the Old Mysore Kingdom.

Vijaya Dashami - विजय दशमि in Sanskrit, is the tenth day of the Calendar when it is said that victory was achieved over evil by the good. The Festival is to commemorate this victory over evil powers.

According to the Indian mythology, the Pandavas, after their exile in Drupada's Capital city panchala, for a year, came back to the 'shami' tree on the outskirts of the panchaala city* where they had hidden their precious weapons (#). They worshipped the shami tree which had protected their weapons for all that time, and worshipped godessess Durga who had blessed them with her protection for the weapons when they had come there to hide it. Meanwhile, the kauravas had attacked Panchala, Drupada's Capital with a huge army. The Pandavas took their weapons, made it straight to the battle from there and won the battle comprehensvely. Hence the day was since then known as 'Vijaya Dashami'.

Even to this day, people exchange shami leaves and wish each other victory in their own ventures and efforts. The following shloka is used, sometimes, to signify that:

शमी शमयते पापम् शमी शत्रुविनाशिनी ।
अर्जुनस्य धनुर्धारी रामस्य प्रियदर्शिनी ॥
करिष्यमाणयात्राया यथाकालम् सुखम् मया ।
तत्रनिर्विघ्नकर्त्रीत्वं भव श्रीरामपूजिता ॥

shamI shamayate papam shamI shaTruvinaashinI |
arjunasya dhanurdhaari raamsya priyadasrshinI ||
karishyamaaNayaatraaya yayaakaalam sukham mayaa |

* - It is said that they had hidden their weapons in a cremation ground, to make sure none spotted it, they had hidden it on a shami tree wrapping them in a white cloth, making the weapons look like a dead body.
